The Littlest Sled Dog.
Igvillu is a little dog with big dreams of becoming a sled dog. When she is adopted from her kennel by an Inuit storyteller and moves to northern Canada, she comes face to face with real sled dogs. Igvillu loves living in the North and chasing siksiks. She's a dog who believes anything is possible!
The Littlest Sled Dog is my ninth book with Michael Kusugak. Every time Michael visited Toronto, he came to my home. Our family always had a dog, one of three cairn terriers. And since Michael likes dogs, they liked him too. He enjoyed their spunky, jolly nature and scruffy look, and his question was always "I wonder how this dog would like it up North."
Finally, just a few years ago, he got his answer when Igvillu, a cairn terrier puppy, came to live with him in his home in Rankin Inlet. Igvillus loves her life with her master; she must be the only cairn (a breed native to Scotland) north of sixty!
UPDATE:The Littlest Sled Dog wins the 2008 Alcuin Society Awards. That's right! Here's what the society had to say about the design I did with Teresa Bubela:
All of the design elements are well handled. The judges were especially impressed with the honesty and continuity of the illustrations and the integration of the type and images. The sophistication with which the two distinctly different styles of images are treated has the effect of neither "drawing down" to children nor "drawing up" to adults.
