Silver Moon

I produced this book with my son, Ian, who wrote the text. It's a prose adaptation of three of Antonin Dvorak's best known operas--Rusalka, Kate and the Devil, and The King and the Charcoal Burner.

One might say that this book took my whole life to make: as a little girl I loved opera, and I have very fond memories of my mother and father taking me to see Rusalka in Prague. It's very much part of the the Czech cultural lexicon, and finally getting to illustrate it was a dream come true.

I did the first illustration for this book way back in 1996, but didn't find anyone who wanted to publish it until 2000. Originally it was to be a 24 page book about Rusalka; however, when Fitzhenry and Whiteside became involved they wanted to expand the book to include two more operas, so Ian added the extra two operas bringing the page total to 76!

The Silver Moon book launch was at the Yorkville Public Library; it was great fun, and I'll be posting photos taken at the event soon!
