Carl the Christmas CarpThe Weather Drum

The Koryaks are a people who live in the Kamchatka region of the Russian Far East along the coastlands of the Bering Sea (on the opposite side of the Pacific to Alaska). Traditionally, they kept herds of reindeer and, very much like the Inuit, hunted seals, whales and caught fish.

Because of my work with Michael Kusugak I was contacted by Cambridge University Press regarding the possibility of illustrating a picture book that retells a Koryak myth involving Big Raven, the first man of the Koryak. In the Weather Drum he must trick Universe and Rain Woman, who live high up in the sky to stop the storm tormenting his people.
